This is a super easy recipe for homemade dog treats that even a bad baker can't mess up! Plus, dog taste testers are always easier to please than human ones! I am a horrible baker and I am happy to say that this is one recipe that really can't go wrong, well unless you burn them....but fido might not even mind. My dog Gul'Dan and his doggie friends loved them at a little adoption anniversary party that I threw. I came across the original recipe online at allrecipe.com when comparing different recipes. I was out of time and needed something easy that I already had the ingredients for. Between bringing home some foster kittens and throwing a doggie party, I ended up making this last minute. Tip: Opt for organic ingredients where you can. Prep Time: 10-15 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Bake Temp: 350 degrees Servings: 20-24 Bake Pan: Mini Muffin Pan (makes 24) Ingredients for Treat Mix - 1 Egg - 1/4 cup Peanut Butter - 1/4 cup Cooking Oil - 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract - 1 cup Shredded Carrots - 3/4 Over Ripe Banana - 1 cup Whole Wheat or White Flour (can substitue for a gluten free flour) - 1 teaspoon Baking Soda Optional - 1/3 cup Honey I didn't think it was necessary to sweeten it.. Toppings - Few teaspoons of Peanut Butter - Use rest of the banana to make thin slices to place on top - Garnish with shredded carrots Other topping options - Blueberries - Meat Jerky - Apple slices - Yogurt drops or carrob chips - Carrot slices INSTRUCTIONS Since I'm not much of a baker, I just mixed everything together willy nilly. Then, spray or grease your mini muffin pan and spoon batter into molds. If your more of a precise baker: Combine the egg, peanut butter, oil, vanilla, and honey, if desired, in a large bowl; blend well. Stir in the carrots and banana mix thoroughly. Sift together the flour and baking soda and fold into the carrot mixture. Spoon cake batter into prepared muffin pan. (yea...I wasn't this fancy..I don't even own a sifter) This mix does not rise, so however tall you fill the mini muffin dish is what you will get. You can stretch the recipe to make 24 or make less adding more to each cup. I originally baked for 20 minutes at 350 degrees but recommend doing 15 minutes, the 20 was just a tad too long unless you want them a little harder. I placed the 20 treats into a pie dish in a circle to fill. I topped with more peanut butter on each mini treat, added sliced banana and garnished with carrot shreds. We added a candle since it was a combo birthday / adoption anniversary for our pomeranian Gul'Dan.
TASTE TESTING The dogs loved them and we had two human test tasters. The humans said they were dry - very dry. I credit that to maybe baking them a little too long. Overall, they were a hit that I would make again. I prefer the bitesized treats to a cake mold where you have to cut it up. This just seemed much easier and even cuter. I just ordered a dehydrator to make some nice fruit and jerky treats for the dogs, will have to post soon the results!
